From Sir Denis Mahon to Renato Meneghetti

I am writing to express my heartfelt thanks for your beautiful book “Pittura e altre arti 1954-1999” Published by Skira this year with an introduction by Vittorio Sgarbi...
...You understand well that I am one who knows nothing about contemporary art, and therefore I have no ability to express any useful judgement about it.
As you know my field of study for over half a century has been Italian painting of the seventeenth and the first half of the eighteenth centuries. What I am interested in finding in an artist is, above all, a strongly individual and positive personality that can also have (but doesn’t necessarily need to have!) an explorative aspect.
Though I have never had occasion to learn the varied languages of contemporary art, I can allow myself to say that your work made a very strong impression on me, being so vast that it can easily be inserted into this category, sometimes with a boldly experimental side...

1999, Sir Denis Mahon
